Waterbed Sizes

In ways similar to the innerspring mattress, waterbeds have undergone significant changes since first hitting the market in the late 1960's. There was a time when waterbeds were no more than a vinyl water bladder surrounded by a vinyl safety liner and wooden frame, topped with a thin piece of insulating foam.

Since then, the waterbed and waterbed sizes have undergone some significant changes. Traditional hard sided waterbeds have been joined by new soft sided waterbeds that incorporate changes in design and size.

Hard sided waterbeds are available in three sizes. When measuring the size of a hard-sided waterbed, you measure the inside of the waterbed frame, not the outside. The California king or waterbed king size is 72" x 84" inside of the frame. The California queen or waterbed queen size is 60" x 84". The super single size is 48" x 84".

In the nineteen eighties, the soft sided waterbed system hit the scene and would change the waterbed market yet again. The new design featured a mattress that, on the outside, had the look and feel of a traditional mattress and did not require a wooded frame. The real difference could be found on the inside.

The old waterbed mattress was replaced with a series of water-filled tubes that ran down the long axis of the bed. The tubes could be filled to achieve the desired firmness and were encased in an upholstered frame. One feature really differentiates hard-sided waterbed sizes from soft side waterbed sizes. The size of soft side waterbeds is the same as the industry standard for conventional bedding.
